The Arc barrel is a highly versatile, space saving and cost effective piece of small Pilates equipment which compliments any matwork programme. These light weight and easily portable barrels can be used to increase or decrease the challenge to the body and are ideally used for rehab to assist matwork exercises. Learn how to use these gently curved arches in a variety of ways including how to help support the back, shoulders and neck, to elongate the spine and therefore prevent lumbar hyper extension in prone exercises, to open up the upper quadrant as well how to increase the range of movement of selective exercises. Discover how the arc barrel is a great rehabilitative tool for those recovering from stress, tension or injury and how they make a safe, supportive surface for deep muscle stretching the joint mobilising.

Elisa Withers
APPI Co-founder:

Co-founder of the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute© Elisa Withers graduated with honors from Latrobe University School of Physiotherapy in Australia with a strong belief in the benefits of the specific exercises for lumbo-pelvic stabilisation. Elisa first recognized the potential of Pilates through 18 years of classical ballet training. Since graduating, Elisa has been working towards developing Pilates within Physiotherapy. Firstly, Elisa was awarded the Felice Rosemary Lloyd trustfund scholarship for international study and training into traditional Pilates. She completed beginner to advanced mat, reformer, cadillac, chairs and barrels Pilates training with Stott Pilates. Alongside Pilates training, Elisa attended courses by renowned Physiotherapists including Julie Hides and Carolyn Richardson to develop a strong understanding on the research on segmental lumbar spine and pelvic stabilisation and its application in the clinical setting.Elisa modified traditional Pilates to use for specific training of the local muscles whose primary role is the provision of dynamic stability and segmental control. This lead into teaching Pilates through the eyes of Physiotherapy throughout Europe. Elisa co-founded the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute© to deliver Pilates to the Physiotherapy world.

Session Descriptions:

Mr Lester Wilson- Minimal Access Lumbar Spine Stabilisation – the advantages for patient rehabilitation
This lecture will look at how the change to minimal access surgical stabilisation techniques have influenced patient recovery from structural surgery. It will evaluate the evidence for improved outcomes, and present the challenge of integrated rehabilitation strategies to the physiotherapy community.

Mr Lester Wilson FRCS
Consultant Spinal Surgeon:

My medical school was UCH in London, and my post-graduate training was in London at UCH, Queen's Square, RNOH Stanmore and Northwick Park, and in Nottingham where I was a Spinal Research Fellow and a Registrar in Orthopaedics.
I was a Consultant in Orthopaedics with an interest in Spinal Surgery at the Whittington Hospital in London for 7 years before moving to the RNOH Stanmore as a Spinal Surgeon with an interest in degenerative conditions of the Lumbar Spine. I was a founder member of the Combined Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Spinal Unit at the Wellington Hospital in 1994 [www.thewellingtonspinalunit.com/the-unit.asp].
I have a research interest in Minimally Invasive Lumbar Fusion Surgery, Bone Graft Substitutes and Motion Preserving Techniques including Spondylolysis repair. I am a Board member and the UK representative of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery [ISMISS] which is now 21 years old [www.ismiss.com]. My NHS practice is predominatly for tertiary referrals, and 40+% of the cases are revisions [some of them my own]. Over 90% of the Posterior Lumbar Spine operations that I perform are minimal access, either endoscopic [for lumbar disc protrusions] or using minimal access tubes to fuse the spine. I am involved in the development of the next generation of spinal implants and biologics and I am an adviser to Medtronic, Depuy, K2M and Apatech.
I passionately believe that the trauma of the surgical approach adversely affects our ability to achieve consistently good outcomes in lumbar spine surgery, and increases the difficulties of patient rehabilitation. Until we overcome this, our ability as surgeons to evaluate the success or failure of the surgery itself will remain compromised. My Fellowship in 1990 was spent evaluating minimal access treatments for lumbar disc protrusions [chemonucleolysis and percutaneous discectomy], and this has been the most important thread in my career. Surgery is only the first step of the patient’s rehabilitation.
I work extensively with Elite athletes including Premiership Football, Rugby Union, Cricket, Swimmers and Athletics.
Outside of medicine I am the co-founder and co-owner of a multiple award winning Gastro Pub business in London [www.dukeorganic.co.uk/].

Mr Ian McDermott: Anterior Knee Pain .... it's not a diagnosis!
This lecture will explore several of the main causes of anterior knee pain symptoms. It will focus on the anatomy and potential pathologies of the front of the knee, in particular highlighting the limitations of clinical examination and some of the benefits of detailed radiological imaging. It will demonstrate how large an array there is of different pathologies, emphasizing just how non-specific the term 'anterior knee pain' truly is.

Mr Ian McDermott:
Mr Ian McDermott is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in knee and hip surgery. Ian left the NHS in 2007 and now works fully privately in the Sports Orthopaedics UK Group, based in London Sports Orthopaedics and also in Northwood Sports Orthopaedics.
Ian is heavily involved in academia and medical education. In 2004 he was the youngest ever surgeon to be elected as a Council Member and Trustee of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (for a 6 to 10-year term of office). He is also a Fellow and Council Member of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine and a Board Member of FIPO – the Federation of Independent Practitioners Organisations.
In 2003 Ian was awarded the President’s Medal of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) for his research into meniscal repair. In 2004 Ian was awarded a Master of Surgery Higher Degree for research into Meniscal Transplantation. In 2005 Ian was appointed as an Honorary Professor Associate at Brunel University, in the School of Sport & Education. Ian is currently the Honorary Secretary of the UK Meniscal Study Group. He is on the Editorial Board or Reviewers Panel of 5 major journals, and has published over 30 papers and given more than 60 presentations at national or international scientific meetings, including many invited lectures.
