Following the success of the 2009 1st Annual APPI Pilates Conference the APPI are pleased to announce the 2nd Annual APPI Pilates Conference to be held on 20th-21st November, 2010 at the award winning Royal College of Physicians in Regents Park, London. This year's conference will also feature a pre-conference Arc Barrel workshop on Friday 19th November, presented by APPI Co-Founder Elisa Withers.

This year's conference, will feature lectures from leading Orthopaedic Surgeons and practical sessions from world respected Pilates Educators. This unique conference will expand participants clinical reasoning, exercise selection, movement library and philosophy.

MET-Rx Lumbar Pelvis

This course is designed to introduce the muscle energy system in evaluation and treatment of the lumbar spine, pelvis, and sacrum. Content includes palpation skills, anatomy, and surface anatomy review, along with biomechanics of the lumbar, pelvis and sacral areas. Treatment of these areas, using muscle energy techniques and relevant soft tissue techniques will be included.

By the end of this course the physiotherapist will be able to confidently assess pelvic, sacral, and lumbar dysfunctions using this method of evaluation and treatment. This course emphasises a hands-on clinical approach as well as self mobilisation and home exercise programs.

MET-Rx Cervical Spine

This course is designed to introduce the muscle energy system in evaluation of cervical spine and thoracic outlet. It will also include testing of cervical ligaments, segmental testing of the cervical spine, muscle energy diagnosis and treatment. It will also include evaluation and treatment of the upper thoracic region along with evaluation and treatment of the structures contributing to thoracic outlet syndrome and upper extremity radiculopathy.

At the conclusion of this course, the physiotherapist will be able to examine and treat cervical and upper thoracic dysfunction as well as thoracic outlet type problems. This course emphasises a ‘hands-on’ approach as well as self-mobilisation and home exercise programs.

MET-Rx Thoracic Spine

This course is designed to introduce the muscle energy system in evaluation and treatment of the rib cage and the thoracic spine. In this course, palpation skills and surface anatomy of the thoracic spine and ribs will be reviewed, along with the biomechanics of the region. Assessment and treatment of rib dysfunctions will follow.

At the conclusion of the course the physiotherapist will be able to examine and treat a range of rib and thoracic spine dysfunctions. Assessment of the thoracic spine using the muscle energy system will conclude the second day.

Matwork Level 1-The Foundation

Matwork Level 1 is the first in the series for the matwork certification , it is also the foundation course for all modified pilates teaching courses. This course introduces the pilates technique, relevant research, beginner level exercises and contra-indicated exercises. Sixteen movements for training lumbo-pelvic, scapulo-thoracic and cervical stabilisation are learnt through observation, self-participation and practice teaching. Discussions of the clinical application of the pilates movements will occur at the time of their teaching to provide participants with the understanding to be able to teach these exercises to patients and clients after the course.

Matwork Level 2- Class Instructor

Matwork Level 2-Class Instructor is the next step in completing the matwork certification. This course can be undertaken 3 months after the completion of Matwork Level 1. Pilates classes are excellent for clients once they become familiar with the Pilates principles. Participants learn to teach Modified Pilates to small groups through observation, self-practice and guided feedback. There is a practical examination at the end of day two of this course to assess the participant’s ability to teach a small Modified Pilates class.

Matwork Level 1 is the pre-requisite for this course.

Matwork Level 3-Intermediate/Advanced

Matwork Level 3- Intermediate/Advanced is the final course in the Matwork certification series. This course builds upon the movements, understanding, cueing skills and exercise selection framework of Matwork Level 1 & Level 2. 30 movements for training lumbo-pelvic, scapulo-thoracic, cervical stabilisation, spinal mobilisation and strengthening of the global muscular system are learnt through self-participation, practice teaching and observation. This course is specifically designed for those who have completed the Matwork Level 1 course at least six months prior and the Matwork Level 2 course at least 3 months prior.

Matwork Certification Exam

Upon completion of Matwork Level 3 you are eligible to sit your certification exam. An exam day is scheduled every 3 months in London, and 6 months in Manchester. This process allows us to ensure that our examination process is standardised by having consistent examiners. Once you have booked onto the relevant exam please call the Institute directly 0207 372 3606. At this stage you will be given a scheduled practical exam timeslot. After this is completed you will then sit your theory exam.

Pilates & the Theraband

This course is designed specifically for participants who wish to learn more about the application of Pilates in Pregnancy and the post natal setting. Lectures on the physiological and biomechanical changes that occur during pregnancy, the postural changes and considerations, SPD, labour, post natal recovery and precautions and contra-indications to exercise in pregnancy will be presented.
